The Paul G. Allen Family Foundation's Emergency Relief Program strengthens the social safety net and helps meet the basic needs of our region's most vulnerable residents, including food, shelter, and other emergency services.

The current economic downturn is having a significant impact throughout the Pacific Northwest. The loss of jobs, rising foreclosure rates, and an unprecedented loss in housing and asset wealth is having a broad impact on all of our communities. At the same time, private and public funders have reduced their funding due to losses in investment and tax revenue. As a result, nonprofit organizations throughout all sectors are experiencing significant economic challenges.

Providers of emergency relief, including food banks and organizations helping people avoid foreclosure and cut-offs in their utilities, report unprecedented increases in requests for services from individuals and families affected by the economic downturn. The Foundation's Emergency Relief Program is working to respond to these economic challenges. We fund organizations and programs that provide our community's most vulnerable residents with food, shelter, and other emergency support. Foundation funding includes increasing resources for immediate needs and supporting efforts that prevent families from becoming homeless and falling deeper into poverty.
