Our future depends on the capacity of new generations to address regional and global challenges and to advance knowledge and innovation. We know today that passion for learning begins at birth and that with encouragement, instruction, and opportunity, that passion can be sustained for a lifetime.
The Paul G. Allen Family Foundation's Education and Youth Engagement Program enhances the ways children prepare for learning; tests new models within the K-12 public education system; and expands opportunities for youth to develop new interests, skills, and abilities. Through their ensuing experiences both in and outside of schools, kids become inspired about their future.
To achieve these goals, Foundation grantmaking in Education and Youth Engagement is focused in two priority areas:
- Great Teachers/Great Schools: The Foundation works with school systems and educators to develop and support new teachers, and participate in the development of new models of education that integrate a rigorous academic program with opportunities for community engagement and experiential learning.
- Out of School Time: The Foundation advances community-based learning in after-school or exploratory programs, community service projects, and internships that foster life-changing experiences for young people.
Great Teachers/Great Schools
All children deserve the benefit of a high-quality education. Public education offers a pathway for children to grow up to be curious, inventive, and productive. The Foundation seeks to improve opportunities for young people through the support and mentoring of new teachers at public schools. In addition, the Foundation supports programs that are testing new models of education that improve learning outcomes for students of diverse backgrounds and abilities.
Grant applications for this priority area are by invitation. Unsolicited proposals and letters of inquiry are not accepted. For inquiries, contact Education.
Out of School Time
The time young people spend outside of schools represents an opportunity for them to explore new ideas; develop new interests, skills, and abilities; and become excited about learning and inspired about the future. By supporting community-based learning in after-school or exploratory programs, community service projects or internships, the Foundation hopes to foster life-changing experiences for young people. Through our Out of School Time program, the Foundation funds high-quality community-based educational programs that offer young people the opportunity to learn new information and new ways of thinking, while making positive connections to caring adults. Successful projects may also result in measurable increases in the capacity of organizations to provide effective programs and make significant positive differences in the lives of its participants.
Grant applications for this priority area are by invitation. Unsolicited proposals and letters of inquiry are not accepted. For inquiries, contact Education.
