The Paul G. Allen Family Foundation's Asset Building Program helps low-income individuals and families acquire the skills and resources needed to achieve long-term economic stability and success.
The challenges facing low-income families are growing and becoming more complex. The gap between men's and women's annual wages remains, the cost of living grows, and limited access to fairly priced credit has made it difficult for nearly a quarter of working families to move out of poverty. And for those families who are making economic gains, a medical emergency or job loss can have devastating consequences. To address these challenges, the Foundation provides funding to nonprofit organizations who are working to achieve the following:
- Improve people's knowledge of and ability to complete household budgets and plan their finances.
- Increase the amount of money people save through Individual Development Accounts (IDAs), bank accounts, and by minimizing the use of check-cashing services.
- Build people's employable skills through higher education and vocational training that leads to livable wage jobs.
- Enable families to access the benefits they qualify for including the EITC, unemployment insurance, and job training.
- Help individuals and families—particularly refugees and immigrants—launch and sustain microenterprises.
Grant applications for this priority area are by invitation. Unsolicited proposals and letters of inquiry are not accepted. For inquiries, contact Asset Building.
